Welcome

One of the charms of having a seasonal club is the anticipation of a new season each year.  The first Saturday in May is always a special occasion as we kick off another year at the Club.  The social interaction of opening night is invigorating.  It’s a chance to catch up with old friends and acquaintances in a great environment.  Where else can you join your friends for dinner and drinks while enjoying the beautiful sunsets over the Navesink River?

This year, we are once again gifted by the contributions of dedicated members who generously give their efforts so that we can enjoy the many activities at the SRYC.  We have a splendid social calendar planned by Gary and Vivian Casazza and the social committee.  From pizza nights to formal dances, from picnics to boat hopping, there are many events planned for 2008 including a reprise of the very successful wine tasting party.

We also have sailing events planned for the competitive at heart.  If you have never been at the Club for some of the Players’ Cup races, you are missing out on some great fun.  The Club maintains four Precision 15 sailboats that are available for use by members.  You need only to get checked out in the boats by the Sailing Committee headed by Dan Herman.  Come on down for the races and you will get a chance to see and participate in some very spirited competitive sailing.

For the thirty-first year, the SRYC will have its annual cruise.  The first stop will be at Port Washington.  There will be a planned dinner at the Port Washington Yacht Club as well as a pre-dinner dock party.  All members are invited to attend even if you are unable to participate in the cruise.

Many of you are not boaters.  Those that are not should be aware that the boaters are unbelievably gregarious as a group and love to invite guests out for a cruise up the river.  This affords you a splendid opportunity to get out on the water without all those pesky obligations that boat owners have.

Every year a contingent of dedicated members put the Club to sleep the weekend after the closing party on election night, carefully watch over the Club through the winter to activate the ice protection systems to protect the club from damage caused by winter temperatures and storms, and then organize the work projects needed to reactivate the Club in the Spring.  This year has been one of exceptional activity.  Several members have spent countless hours supervising the solicitation of bids and then the performance of contractors for the electrical modernization project, the windows, entranceway, and siding project, and the new front walkway.  A special thanks from all of the members to those of you who so generously provided your time and efforts to the project.

Yatesie and I wish you all a delightful season at the Club, and look forward to seeing you there.
